Knightia are related to herring; its modern day relative is the alewife  found in Lake Michigan. As with alewives, thousands of Knightia washed ashore when they were killed from warm water. Two species, the Knightia alta and the Knightia eocena are present in the quarries. The Knightia eocena has a body depth of 25% to 31% of its length. The Knightia alta looks fatter, with a body  depth of 27% to 36% of its length. Almost all the Knightia we have are Knightia eocena and are sometimes are up to 7 inches long.
